How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Sexuality- The gay males challenge the conventional 'couple' who are male and female. This similarly links to Gauntletts idea that the relationship between the mass media and identity argues that the mass media today challenge the traditional definitions of gender; is is represented in our film as their dialect challenges the idea of toughness and emotional reticence as they contradict this idea by being more involved in 'girl talk'. Age- The teenagers in the film opening are drinking and smoking which may appeal to our target audience. The idea of drinking and smoking reinforces Stuart Halls' idea that the negative representation of young people is deliberate and justifies social control. Which in this case the drinking and smoking was deliberate, as these objects connote danger. Gender- All characters are represented equally as the camera shots and angles do not show one character being more dominant. However when Ellie is framed on her own it conveys her as the 'damsel in distress'. Mise en scene- Ellie who is in the darker lighting connotes dangers and builds up the idea that something bad is going to happen. All characters are wearing the conventional outfits seen in horror movies, which all fit with each character. Ethnicity- All characters are white as in the film openings that we analysed there were no black or ethnic characters. Also we used our friends as the characters as we believed that they fit the role of the conventional characters which is seen through our character profiles. This instills institutional racism.
