Storyboard

Image
Initially this was going to be our storyboard, but when we realised that we was wasting too much filming time on doing shots of just the characters to try to 'introduce' them to the audience we realised that it was pointless. Also this timeline had no depth or detail to it so we decided to do it again which is the one below. This timeline has more depth to it and was more thought out. The blank spaces were left as if what we had filmed was not enough we would film extra things and include them into our opening. I believe that this timeline is a lot more detailed than the figure above. Although I think that what we filmed did reflect the timeline quite a lot, other than just individual shots of the characters which were not included.

Timeline

Image
Our timeline includes how long that certain shot is going to last, visual images and the shots that are going to be used. I believe that we have stuck to this timeline consistently well, with maybe a few shots just over or under the time scheduled. This format was chosen as is it very visual and adds insight into our film opening. Although slasher films use dark, dull colours I considered that images would create my blog to be more vibrant, rather than just a timeline with explainations of what shots are going to be used.

Character Profiles

Image
Leah- plays the role of the hysterical/pandora character. This is due to her having a very chilled and laid back mannerism. Her dialect within the opening shows that she doesn't want to provoke any trouble, so in some sense is the peace maker. I believe that her character does not really fit into a category, however in a horror film the 'pandora' character is often portrayed as innocent which is how Leah comes across in our film opening, but this could be misleading and when the film continues there true side could be shown. Chloe- plays the rebellious character along with Ellie. A rebellious teen who is drinking, which connotes danger and conventionally gives the killer a victim. Her mannerism fits well with the character as she establishes her independence and is often a risk-taker; this is seen in the opening as only her and Ellie are drinking, this shows that the other characters respect authority and does not portray them as rebellious teens. Toby- plays ...

Once they arrive, Emily believes that she can see something in the distance, but convinces herself that it is nothing.  All characters are settled, they start being rebellious by drinking and smoking, but when one character wonders off to explore and doesn’t return that’s when all the characters realise something isn’t right. Codes And Conventions Of Slasher Films

Below is my powerpoint presentation that has been uploaded to slideshare, to enable that people who view my blog can access it through a link to explore it rather that through screen shots. http://www.slideshare.net/ChloeOwen1/codes-and-conventions-of-slasher-films-71116421 The reason I completed this task in a slideshare was due to the idea of it being more creative and more interesting to look at rather than just a plain document, also it keeps all the information together in a more well ordered and interesting way. Media studies is a very creative subject and I believe that this presentation form reflects that, and although most of my posts are word documents they include things such as storyboards/pictures and mindmaps.

Analyzing Slasher Films

Image
This analysis was completed in a table which is different to the way that I analysed the other film openings. I believe that this is quite visual in the way that it is formatted, rather than just blocks of information it picks out the key codes and conventions and describes what they connote.

Analyzing Slasher Films

Saw VI (2009) Stock settings; could possibly be a slaughter house or chamber, the textual evidence for this is the surrounding cadges, the weapons and the device that is fixed to the male and females head. The establishing shot at the beginning is used to show the setting, it shows the props on the table which are; a butchers knife, sharp knife and some rope, these items are usually associated with brutal murders, connoting that someone is possibly going to die, this links to the theme of death. The props are almost in a spotlight, this gives an illustration that they are a main part in the scene. It also shows the two characters trapped in cages and the low key lighting in the room, this could convey that both characters are going to compete with each other, this refers to the theme of life and death. Stock characters; the male and female are the stock characters in the opening of this sequence, due to them being the main pinpoint, also jigsaw is a stock character due to him bei...

Analysing Slasher Films

A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984) Creation of enigma; my findings were that the possibly male character could be the killer, who is plotting something secretively. The textual evidence for this is the low angle camera shot onto the shoes, where his feet slowly drag behind him; the shot of just the shoes with no connection to his facial identity creates the ideology of the unknown. Introduction to characters; my finding were the stereotypical 'blonde, white female virgin', who is typically the victim in slasher movies. The textual evidence for this is; the close up of her facial expressions, which could connote that she is the victim, also the long shot of her running, conveys she is escaping her fear or the idea of being a victim. Also we are introduced to the villain, the textual evidence for this is the close up shot of the shoes, weapons, the over the shoulder shot of him within his surroundings and the close up of his hands, all of these elements convey he is the villain. ...

In these recordings their opinion is asked, such as "do you think there is a mood created?." Getting true opinions is important, as we need to include aspects and conventions of slasher films that will appeal to our target audience. I believe we could of asked more people, in order to receive a more reliable response. However when we recorded the first focu...

Pre-Lim Task

https://youtu.be/k-DpUB0C7Ig Above is the link to my pre-lim task, which involves; the 180 degree rule, shot reverse shot and  We did not include that much dialect as getting the concept of the rules was the most vital part of this task. This task introduced and allowed me to get to grips with the different concepts/rules that I may include in order to make our film opening look semi-professional, rather than a few clips just put together with music added. Due to the different formats from iMovie uploading the clips onto YouTube the videos and titles look shaken. However this did not occur when filming or editing on iMovie.

Analysing Slasher Films

Childs play In the opening of Childs play the audience is drawn in due to the creation of enigma due to the iconography use of guns, this suggests that there is violence and suspense throughout the film as this takes place so early on in the film. This pairs with the non diegetic music which adds suspense. Due to the guns and the used of non diegetic police sirens this introduces the characters as criminals suggesting that they don't play a positive role and that neither of them are heros in Childs Play, later in the opening the plot is set as one character promises revenge on the other character which also narrates the story as it suggests what will go on through the movie. His promise to get revenge makes the audience become very intrigued with these characters and this makes them want to watch on as they want to find how this character gets his revenge. Also the introduction to the doll suggests that the doll is significant and arguably is a character or iconography, the dolls...

Initial Ideas

Image
The reason the mindmap is formatted in this way is due to the fact that it includes all the key codes and conventions of what is in the genre/sub-genre. The aspects included in this mindmap is what we initially intend to included in our film opening, we do not want to rush the opening so we are therefore going to include as many aspects as we can without rushing the opening. This mindmap is very detailed as it includes all the aspects that are a possibility for our film opening, and our final idea will try to include as many characteristics above as possible.

Location Scout

Image
This is the location that we decided to use, we used this area as it was voted the best place for a slasher film to be located; so in order to appeal to our target audience this is the location that predominantly had to be used. It is a well known place, so it was easily accessible for our cast.

Analysing Slasher Films

Sorority Row (2009) Introduction to characters; a mid shot is used to establish 5 girls drinking in a bedroom. A close up onto one of the blonde girls is used to possibly connote that she is a potential victim. A mid shot is used of the laptop showing a male and female getting intimate, which could be a sign of the plot that could possibly be 'stalking'. Stock settings; A stock setting could be the bedroom as this is established as soon as the film opening begins. Stock characters; The stock characters are the 5 girls who are firstly presented on screen in the establishing shot, also the two characters being viewed on the laptop by the sorority sisters are also the stock character; this is due to the connections between all of the 7 characters. Themes;  Possible themes for this film could be; death as the girl who is being viewed on the laptop is sick , due to the girls stating that they gave the male something to put in her drink, this could also link to the theme of pran...

04/01/2017 Planning

Image
Above is a mind map of  initial thoughts about slasher films which is a sub-genre of a horror film. I have initially chosen to base my opening on a horror, this is due to the idea of an opening sequence being a lot less action packed and more of a cliff hanger to what is going to happen later on in the film. I believe that it will be easier to make a film opening for a horror as opposed to an action film, as there are not as many complex conventions to be followed compared to those in action films; (girls, guns, cars and explosions).
