Analysing Slasher Films

Childs play
In the opening of Childs play the audience is drawn in due to the creation of enigma due to the iconography use of guns, this suggests that there is violence and suspense throughout the film as this takes place so early on in the film. This pairs with the non diegetic music which adds suspense. Due to the guns and the used of non diegetic police sirens this introduces the characters as criminals suggesting that they don't play a positive role and that neither of them are
heros in Childs Play, later in the opening the plot is set as one character promises revenge on the other character which also narrates the story as it suggests what will go on through the movie. His promise to get revenge makes the audience become very intrigued with these characters and this makes them want to watch on as they want to find how this character gets his revenge. Also the introduction to the doll suggests that the doll is significant and arguably is a character or iconography, the dolls is represents as a significant role as the long shot shows numerous dolls in one shot which is paired with the title of the movie. As it is paired with the title it suggest that the doll is the main character/iconography of the movie.
Finally the use of setting is significant as they enter a toy shop. As the camera has a mid-close up of the sign this suggests that this is a significant factor to the story line as this is one of the first things we are drawn to also it is very significant as we then see the main character, the doll.

Scream 4
The enigma is created very quickly into the opening as the loud ringing off the phone breaks the silence of the room adding suspense to the scene, it is paired with the creepy diegetic voice on the other end of the phone suggesting danger straight away to the film. There are numerous death is the opening which quickly sets the genre/ subgenre of the movie also the fact that they're all killed off in the opening suggests that they aren't main character but they are key to narrate the story and set the plot that "ghost face" is the unknown killer, as the killer is anonymous this makes the audience become engrossed with the storyline. The editing by pairing different scenes of the killings together also adds enigma as the killing are constant so therefore it adds suspense to the opening straight away. Finally the iconography of the knifes is very significant as when knifes are in the frame they either have a close up or they are gazed by certain characters the reoccurrence and the symbolism of the knives suggest that they are key.

I believe that this analysis is not as detailed as it could be and seeing as we was meant to analyse 3 film openings, this person has only analysed 2 so therefore our group has lacked on the amount of analysis that has been produced.
